Farnham House, County Cavan: Irish Gentry go to War

When Major General Sir Oliver Nugent was appointed as the commander of the 36th (Ulster) Division he asked for his friend and County Cavan neighbour, Lord Farnham, to be appointed as his aide-de-camp. Their friendship had been formed not just in the social whirl of their landed Irish gentry roots, but also in the formation of the Cavan branch of the Ulster Volunteer Force. It was in the grounds of Lord Farnham’s home, now a luxury hotel, that they trained the men they expected to protect Protestants and unionists in the event of an Irish civil war. Nick Perry has edited a book of Nugent’s letters; Dr. Timothy Bowman is from the University of Kent and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Both men have spent some time at the Farnham Estate.
