Bonamargy Friary, Co Antrim: HMS Viknor Lost at Sea

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

County Antrim’s rugged north coast has witnessed many shipwrecks. Bonamargy Friary, now in ruins, has perched on its treacherous edge since the 1500s. This ancient Franciscan site is the final resting place of sailors from HMS Viknor, a World War One merchant cruiser. In January 1915 she was on active patrol in heavy seas when all contact was lost. Did she founder in the violent weather, or did she strike a German mine? No-one can say for certain, but for miles along the coast of Londonderry and Antrim her crew were washed ashore.
