The village of Brougton is home to a rare memorial situated on the High Street, depicting a soldier in deep thought resting his chin on his Lee Enfield Rifle. It was erected in memory of those from the village that fell during both World Wars. The Earl of Yarborough accompanied by the Lieutenant Colonel Sutton Nelthorpe unveiled the memorial on Sunday 23 October 1923, concluding by a band performing “Fallen Heroes”. The memorial features 34 names of soldiers from WW1 with the inscription ‘To the Glory of God In honour of the men of Broughton who served their King and country in the Great War’. One name featured is a soldier that fell in the trenches during the Battle of the Somme, Montague Christopher; husband and father to four children and 2nd game keeper at the Brocklesby Estate. His story has been brought to life thanks to letters and artefacts sent back to his wife from the front lines in Northern Lincolnshire.
