Sacred soil arrives in Southampton

Lou Hannan

Available for over a year

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 arrived in Southampton with a very special cargo. It's the final sandbag to make the journey from the First World War cemeteries in Belgium containing soil from those sites. The sandbag's arrival, and its subsequent onward journey to The Guards Museum in London, marks the culmination of a project which begun several years ago. It was intended to build a Memorial Garden containing soil brought back from every battlefield in Flanders where soldiers of the seven regiments of the Household Division died in World War One. BBC Radio Solent reporter Neil Sackley was alongside as the liner docked at first light.
