"Female genital mutilation is not child abuse"

Reya El-Salahi

Available for over a year

Stronger laws to protect vulnerable children and people at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) have been promised in the Queen's Speech. It follows recent government efforts to prevent the practice through a national week of action, targeting people planning to carry out FGM on British residents travelling to Africa. But this could be driving it "further underground", according to a British-Sierra Leonean woman with first-hand experience. In this clip, Jay Kamara-Frederick tells the BBC's Reya El-Salahi that the language used in the campaign could be doing more harm than good.
