Observers say, the outcome is hardly in doubt, President Bashar al-Assad is almost guaranteed to win. Voting will take place in government-held territory. Many other parts of the country remain either under rebel control or in conflict zones. The interior ministry says there are 15.8 million eligible voters, both inside and outside Syria, and about 9,600 polling stations have been set up around the country.
