Lurgan Mail, Co Armagh: A Window on the War

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

Today William Street in Lurgan is a lively thoroughfare, lined with small shops and takeaways. In 1914 the street had a more residential feel - the substantial houses looking out on people and horse-drawn vehicles making their way to and from the nearby railway station. As befitting his important role in the town, William White, the editor of the Lurgan Mail, lived in one of these grand homes. Like so many other small papers across the country, the Lurgan Mail was THE place for ordinary people to keep abreast of the war. Local historian Dr Colin Cousins stands outside William White's former home and catches the pulse of Lurgan in 1914. Location: William Street, Lurgan, BT66 6JB Extracts from the Lurgan Mail are read by Stuart Graham.
