Mehli Mehta foundation

BBC Arts

Available for over a year

Perhaps the best known western classical musician from India is the conductor Zubin Mehta. His father Mehli Mehta was a violinist who wanted to improve opportunities for classical musicians in India. The foundation that takes his name runs classes for 500 young students. Nicola Benedetti and players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland gave a masterclass there in Mumbai. Petroc Trelawny met with the foundation's Sakar Mistri, and asked whether it is odd to be pushing western music in a country with its own rich classical tradition.
