South Sudan's short history as an independent nation has been marred by ethnic violence. Amnesty International has accused both sides in the conflict of violence and rape. Alastair Leithead has been to Bentiu, where he witnessed some of the horrific violence being inflicted in this fractured society. Karnie Sharp returns to her native South Africa, where elections have just taken place. Although it looks like the ANC still commands the support of the majority of the people, their leader's approval ratings are faltering. She asks whether the incoming government could be doing more to help those black South Africans left behind after the end of apartheid.
