Gambier Terrace, Liverpool: Women’s War Service Bureau

Within three days of the outbreak of World War One, the Women’s War Service Bureau was formed. The women originally set out to provide information to people in need from 1 Gambier Terrace, but this quickly changed as more needs were catered for. The Women’s War Service Bureau started to put together parcels for people serving at the Front. Bandages and dressings for hospitals, and comforts for soldiers. As they started providing more services, 1 Gambier Terrace was proving insufficient, so five more premises were taken over in Liverpool City Centre – on Bold Street and Berry Street. Prisoners of war serving with the Kings Liverpool Regiments were sent parcels, clothes were made for children of soldiers, a coffee cart was constructed in the First Western General Hospital in Fazakerley as was a residence for families of injured soldiers. The Bureau continued their work after the war – helping people who were affected, and then into World War Two. They were praised for their thoroughness and efficiency.
