Moldova is surrounded by Ukraine on three sides, and EU-member state Romania in the West. Then there is the Russian-subsidised breakaway region of Transnistria. Tessa Dunlop finds that Moldovan residents disagree as to whether to turn east, and Russian help, like Transnistria did, or west to the EU and its subsidies. This tension is played out in the Moldovan village of Farladeni, which stands to get an EU-funded covered market and school. The British island of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of northern France, has long been known for its apple-based products. Apple orchards used to make up over a fifth of the arable land, and a dark apple spread called black butter remains a traditional and much-prized delicacy. Christine Finn returns to her native Jersey and joins locals in the making of black butter, a job that takes all night, literally.
