Hope amidst crowds

This week our correspondents tell tales of finding themselves amidst crowds they weren't expecting, nor were always happy to be stuck in. But at least some of them found surprising signs of hope among these crowds. Joanna Jolly, in a frightening mob of people inflamed by communal violence, finds hope embodied in a Hindu baby saved by a Muslim woman; Jonathan Head can't move for coachloads of Japanese businessmen raising hopes of trade in Myanmar and Kirsty Lang is terrified of the lethal Atlantic Bushmaster snakes rescued by a doctor in Brazil. Two correspondents are frustrated rather than hopeful though: Hugh Schofield is fed up with the tourists shopping on the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris; and Charlotte McDonald resents how much her soon-to-be-married friends' hen parties are costing nowadays.
