Ugandan inflation

Business Daily

Available for over a year

Uganda's central bank governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, talks about high interest rates, inflation and debt. The BBC's Paul Lewis asks whether he can force commercial banks to lower their lending rates. Geoffrey Walubi, who is 33 year-old father of four, is unable to repay his bank loans. The interest on his loan has increased from 25% to 31% and girls in Kampala are being taught the basics of personal finance in order to avoid the debt trap. There'll be more on Uganda from Paul Lewis and Lesley Curwen in 'Your Money' on BBC World Service live at 1300 GMT on 12th February. And Lucy Kellaway from the Financial Times muses on the way colleagues bonded through smoking and drinking together, something that was lost when smoking in the work place was banned.
