Kofi Annan: Syria 'could explode over the borders'

Today

Available for over a year

The former UN secretary general Kofi Annan told the Today programme that in his judgement "there can be no military solution" in Syria. He said that the conflict in Syria will not "implode" as it did in Libya. "In all likelihood it will explode... over the borders," he told Jim Naughtie. Kofi Annan is in London to launch the report of the global commission he has chaired on election processes worldwide called Deepening Democracy. He stepped down as UN envoy to Syria in the summer after admitting failure in trying to bring the warring parties together.
