Brazil and Ireland

From Our Own Correspondent

Available for over a year

Owen Bennett Jones presents stories from Justin Rowlatt in Brazil and Kieran Cooke off the west coast of Ireland. Amazon Farmers Gilmar Burnier did as he was told to do by the government - move into the Amazon rainforest, cut down trees and plant crops. But now that deforestation is a major environmental issue, Gilmar and his fellow gauchos are being shunned by the authorities. Justin Rowlatt traveled to Brazil to hear his story. Achill Henge Ireland has plenty of ancient settlements and ancient ruins. But on a visit to Achill island, off the far west coast of Ireland - up a mountain and in the middle of a bog - Kieran Cooke took on some atrocious weather and discovered a peculiar, very modern type of monument. 'Achill Henge' is a stone circle, constructed over the course of a weekend, and the locals are now wondering what to make of it.
