China and southern Africa

From Our Own Correspondent

Available for over a year

Stories from Michael Bristow in China and Hamilton Wende travelling through southern Africa, presented by Owen Bennett Jones. Trailed by police in Sichuan More than a dozen Tibetans in the Chinese province of Sichuan have been protesting against Chinese rule in one of the most desperate ways possible - by setting themselves alight. Many have died from their injuries. The Chinese response has been to tighten security in the area. Michael Bristow attempted to travel to Sichuan to find out more. Slow train through Africa Train is one of the most romantic ways to travel, and Hamilton Wende recently hitched a ride on a luxury trip through six southern African countries. Along the way he encountered natural beauty, warm welcomes - and the hardship of poverty.
