Owen Bennett Jones introduces a special essay from Mark Doyle on Nigeria's recent turmoil over oil prices and the attacks mounted by Boko Haram. Nigeria, country that should in theory be prospering from its oil wealth. In fact, the government recently cut its subsidies at the pumps aqnd put up petrol prices - provoking widespread popular protests. That is just one problem - there is also great civil strife along ethnic and religious lines. Radical Islamists have mounted multiple attacks on the northern Nigerian city of Kano. There were shootouts between the insurgents and the security forces, and a string of bombings. Our World Affairs Correspondent Mark Doyle has been covering both the demonstrations and the sectarian violence.
