Boycott of The Sun newspaper

Witness History

Available for over a year

In 1989, the people of Liverpool began boycotting Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper over its reporting of the Hillsborough football disaster. The Sun later apologised, but sales in the city have never recovered. Witness speaks to a Liverpudlian involved in the boycott, and to a local radio journalist who remembers the city's anger.
