Abdullah Abdullah emerged as the main rival to President Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan's presidential elections last year. But he withdrew from a leadership run-off saying that he couldn't trust that the electoral system would be free of fraud. Now he is sidelined in a system which has no formal role for an opposition. His hopes rest on parliamentary elections later this year. Owen Bennett Jones asks him about talking to the Taliban, escaping suicide bombers and his hopes for the future.
