Dying to Give Birth

Assignment

Available for over a year

According to figures from the UN a woman in Pakistan dies almost every half an hour because of problems from pregnancy or childbirth. Most women in Pakistan cannot afford to buy proper medical care. The supply of even basically trained mid-wives far outstrips demand for care. For Assignment Jill McGivering follows the work of Dr Nighat in a maternity hospital in Karachi as she deals with daily reality of neo-natal death and poor facilities for pregnant women.
