A new study has shown that abuse, loneliness and financial struggles are having an adverse impact on the health of over 60s in Wales. Public Health Wales, Bangor University and Liverpool John Mores University surveyed over 1,000 people in Wales. They found that 1 in 5 people over 60 had felt lonely or socially isolated, and almost as many had struggled financially. Professor Karen Hughes said “Preventing these adverse experiences and supporting those affected by them is essential to enable older people to maintain health”. But if you’re over 60, or know somebody who is, we want to hear from you… Is anything adversely affecting yours or a loved one’s health? An expert on food policy has warned that the UK should be stockpiling food, as it is not prepared for climate shocks or wars that could disrupt imports. Professor Tim Lang has said that the UK produces far less food than it needed to feed itself, leaving it prone to shocks. The UK is one of the least food self-sufficient countries in Europe, with figures from 2021 showing it could only feed 54% of its population itself. This comes at the same time as new figures have shown the UK has its lowest numbers of sheep in over 40 years, as more lamb is imported from New Zealand. Are you concerned that the UK is not farming enough food? And finally, there are calls for the balti to be given UNESCO cultural protected status. In Birmingham, campaigners would like to see the curry protected - just like a French baguette or a Neapolitan pizza. UNESCO lists foods and culinary traditions on its intangible cultural heritage list – but there are no UK foods on this list at the moment. So are there foods which you would like to see given special protection?
