The Essay

Available for over a year

Playing a musical instrument - whether you're professional or amateur - rarely follows a simple trajectory of practice and progress and it makes psychological as much as physical demands that can come to define a person. Alan Hall - who's returned to trumpet playing after a three decade hiatus - talks with musicians about the nature of the relationship to their chosen instrument. Today, Timothy Rundle, the Principal Oboe with the Philharmonia, recalls falling for this notoriously tricky instrument before he was big enough to play it. Including extracts from the Philharmonia's recordings of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite and Bach's Goldberg Variations arranged by Robin O'Neill. A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 3
