Disco began in the late 60s and 70s in America, emerging from funk music. The sound is characterised by a 4 x 4 beat, disco synths, funk guitars and soulful vocals. It evolved in the late 90s and 00s to become Disco House, with looped samples bringing the sound to a new generation. Pete Tong explores seminal records from the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire, Ten City and Gusto, as well as newer tracks that highlight disco’s enduring influence on the modern day dance scene. Plus, one of the most prolific producers in the new wave of disco, Purple Disco Machine, is in the Radio 1 Dance Rewind with a spin of his 2017 Essential Mix. Produced by We Are Grape for BBC Radio 1 Dance.
