In a special report from Ghana, we investigate claims that the UK is sending clothes that can’t be recycled here to landfill in developing countries in Africa. Around 50% of the clothes we donate in the UK is sold in charity shops – the rest is graded and either recycled here or sent abroad. Importers in West Africa say the quality has deteriorated over the years and they can’t sell the clothes into local markets – meaning some of it ends up on open landfill sites and washing up on beaches. But the Textile Recycling Association in the UK say the claims are exaggerated and based on flawed research. From today the traffic light system is replaced with a single red list. Most fully vaccinated travellers arriving from non-red list countries will no longer have to take a test before setting off for the UK. It’s good news for the beleaguered tourism industry in the UK. We speak to businesses in York about whether they’re expecting a boost in visitor numbers. And we’re talking turkey – it might seem early but with 83 days until Christmas, could food shortages tempt more of us take up the option of a frozen turkey this year?
