Nian Zhen, a maths professor originally from China and now living in Glasgow, welcomes a child with special needs into her home at Hogmanay. She provides regular respite weekends for the boy, Clyde's, foster parents. They run through the usual routine and navigate tantrums and anger - on either side - and Nian Zhen reflects on the unlikely circumstances that allowed her to escape famine in Communist China and make a new life abroad.
