John and Irene Hays hit the headlines last year when they bought 555 Thomas Cook stores last year, protecting the jobs of more than 2,000 employees. John started his travel agent, 'Hay's Travel' forty years ago in the back of his mother's shop. He and his wife Irene have steered the company through recessions, the internet revolution, and snobbery from other parts of the industry.
