During his recent visit to the Antipodes, Peter White talked to Mary-Anne Diamond about the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is due to be rolled out in Australia. The scheme is funded by tax payers and is paid out to those who need it, rather than the UK system of being a benefit which people are required to claim. Neil Jarvis works for the National Foundation for the Blind in New Zealand and before moving there, lived in the UK. Neil explains the main differences between the two funding systems. Peter also met Teri McElroy, who lives in Christchurch and experienced the city's major earthquake in 2011. Teri describes to Peter how all her familiar landmarks were destroyed, making navigation for a blind person extremely difficult and in some cases impossible.
