Table tennis world champion at 85, Knife Crime, Periods, Advertising and Sport

Woman's Hour

Available for over a year

This week we're running a series about knife crime in conjunction with BBC London. We hear from reporter Ayshea Buksh and Jenni Murray speaks to three women whose sons and a grandson were killed in London by knives in the last 14 months. We talk to 85-year-old Pam Butcher, table tennis world champion for her age category and recently voted as Table Tennis England's Player's Player of the Year. This summer we're discussing films for uncertain times in our Summer of Love season. Today it's Grease. Difficult to forget John Travolta and Olivia Newton John singing 'You're the One that I Love'. But is it possible to make a case for the film's feminist credentials? Two new ads have set firsts for sanitary product advertising by showing blood instead of blue liquid and sanitary towels being placed in underwear. Are we finally becoming more open about periods? We examine some of the myths in particular that exercise should be avoided during menstruation. As the Rio Olympics get under way, how do periods affect an athlete's sporting performance, and that of you or I? Presenter: Jane Garvey Producer: Lucinda Montefiore.
