Attempts by George Osborne to make the economy the decisive issue in the referendum, by saying a vote to leave the EU would be followed by an austerity budget, have resulted in a direct challenge to his authority. More than 60 Tory MPs have said his position as Chancellor would become untenable. He's been backed by David Cameron, who said Brexit would leave a "huge hole" in the public finances.
