We begin in 1975 with a frank exploration of the era's changing ideas about marriage, independence and female sexuality. Birmingham, 1975. Susan makes the radical decision to leave her husband and take her two children, Emma and Tim, to live in a commune. When this first commune doesn't work – largely because commune life begins to mimic the gender power structures of the outside world – Susan feels compelled to move to an all-female commune.
