The Mersey Militants

Archive on 4

Available for over a year

Liverpool journalist Liam Fogarty tells the story of how the Militant Tendency dominated his city's politics in the 1980s. Liam asks how a small group of extreme leftists were able to lead Liverpool City Council into a high-profile confrontation with the government of Mrs. Thatcher. He speaks to former Militant leaders Derek Hatton and Tony Mulhearn and to former Westminster politicians who were drawn into the conflict, including Neil Kinnock and Michael Heseltine. And he explores the legacy today of one of the most dramatic eras in British politics, both for the country and for Liverpool. Producer: Helen Grady.
