Mariella Frostrup presents a special programme from The Royal Opera House on the prolific and influential Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott. Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771, and followed in his father's footsteps as a lawyer before embarking on a writing career which made him the most important and significant writer of his day. Despite being credited with creating the historic novel, for his innovative characters and his inspiring portrayals of both Scottish and English life and myths, as well as influencing writers from Dickens to Dumas, his expansive romanticised stories eventually fell out of favour in the 20th century and his literary works were neglected. Bringing his novels and literary legacy to life are biographer Stuart Kelly, authors Denise Mina and Allan Massie and actor Emun Elliott. Producer: Andrea Kidd.
