Now 74, Penelope Lively describes her latest book Consequences as her romantic novel, one she has always wanted to write. She talks about her aunt, the acclaimed wood engraver Rachel Reckitt, who inspired one of her characters, about why she no longer writes children's books despite her lifelong fascination with and love for children and why she always finds it difficult to explain what she actually does as a novelist and why it counts as a 'proper' job.
