If you're a budding Julien Temple (he's directing a film about Glastonbury and lives locally) or Tim Burton, the good news is that it's not just a one-time opportunity - the media centre on the High Street in Bridgwater is open all year round. The three-day course was led by two filmmakers, Dan Gale and Exley Edwards, who took students through the basics of getting their ideas in the can. They learnt about good camera technique and made a short film that will get a public screening. | "Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't do it." | | Dan Gale |
One of the students said: "It's been brilliant - I've never done anything like this before! "I thought I wouldn't be able to do any of the technical stuff, but the cameras were pretty easy to use." Want to make it big? Exley Edwards has advice on getting into the movie-making business: "Be determined, focused and creative." "Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't do it, because if you stick at it and hang around with the right people, you can," Dan added. | | Students at The Engine Room |
"The more you practise the better you're going to get." Dan explained how the Engine Room is kitted out with professional-standard equipment: "I have heard of certain TV channels that use exactly the same cameras as we do." The Engine Room is not only open to people who participate in one of their purpose-run courses. "There are days in the week when you can come to the Engine Room and use a lot of the equipment for nothing, as long as it's used within the building," Dan said. "You can also rent the equipment out, and it doesn't cost very much at all." The Engine Room offers courses and drop-in sessions for young filmmakers and students with an interest in the media: |
