Manju loses Commonwealth Gold

Manju Wanniarachchi
The CGF Court decided that Manju be disqualified from the event and that the medal awarded to him will be forfeited and returned to the CGF

Sri Lanka has lost its only gold medal which it won in the last Commonwealth Games at New Delhi after the boxer failed in the dope test.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has decided that the boxer, Manju Wanniarachchi will forfeit his medal and “subject to the conclusion of any appeal process," the gold medal will be awarded to Sean McGoldrick from Wales.

The CGF Court headed by the Malaysian Prime minister Tunku Imran decided that: “The athlete be disqualified from the event within he took part at the 2010 Commonwealth games and all results nullified and that the medal awarded to him will be forfeited and returned to the CGF."

Wanniarachchi tested positive for banned anabolic agent 19-Norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone.

The CGF court has also given the athlete a 21 days to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for sports.

'New measures'

Wanniarachchi won the first gold medal for Sri Lanka in 72 years at the delhi games and was seen as a national hero when he returned home.

Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage

The CGF’s honorary medical advisor, Dr M Jetgathesan reported last 18 October that the athlete has tested positive for the banned substance.

All Sri Lankan sports persons are subjected to dope testing four times a year after this incident, the country’s sports minister Mahindananda Alutgamage told the BBC Tamil Service.

“We had an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department after the doping allegation and the report said that he had taken the drug inadvertently, however based on the report we banned him from boxing," he said.

The Sri Lankan government or the local Olympic Association will not appeal against the decision, however the athlete may do so if he desires, said the minister.

Sri Lankan city of Hambantota along with Australian city of Gold Coast are bidding for the 2018 games. Both will present their final bids at Kuala Lampur on 10 May.

“We are very confident of getting the opportunity to host the 2018 games” the minister says.

The Delhi Games had been dogged by various controversies including allegations of large scale corruption and facilities not ready till the last moment.
