A court in Sri Lanka has ordered the authorities to produce five novice Buddhist monks allegedly abused by a senior monk to the forensic medical officer and submit his report to the court. Aparekke Punnananda thero, a former parliamentarian representing Sinhala nationalist Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) is accused of sexually abusing five underage novice monks in his custody. The court has earlier ordered the suspect monk to report to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) every Sunday. The Colombo magistrate on Thursday rejected an appeal by the suspect’s lawyer to relax that bail condition. In a report to the court the NCPA said investigations are still being carried out. The NCPA was also ordered by the magistrate to produce the parents or the guardians of the allegedly abused novice monks to the courts at the next hearing. The NCPA earlier informed the court that the suspect has admitted sexually abusing child monks under his custody. In the previous court hearing, Aparekke Punnananda thero appeared before the court with security provided by the Ministerial Security Division. The hearing was postponed until 21 July. | LOCAL LINKS President 'ignoring' Pirivena leaders02 May, 2011 | Sandeshaya Buddhist representation in Royal Wedding23 March, 2011 | Sandeshaya 'Abused' child monks handed to probation18 March, 2011 | Sandeshaya 'Ensure safety' Lanka urges India26 January, 2011 | Sandeshaya Chennai Buddhist temple attacked25 January, 2011 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
