Chennai Buddhist temple attacked
An unidentified group on Monday night had stormed the Mahabodhi Temple in Chennai and assaulted devotees and Buddhist monks.

There were some damage to the temple
Three monks were injured as a result of the attack

Indian media reported that a gang of about ten, armed with clubs, broke into the Mahabodhi Society Temple during the night and vandalised the premises and attacked the monks who tried to intervene.

"Two Srilankan monks and one Nepali monk suffered injuries and were treated at hospital". Said the monk in charge of the temple, Ven. Kalawane Mahanama thero.

Speaking to the BBC Sandeshaya, Mahanama thero said the authorities had arrested two suspects and police investigations had begun into the incident.

New security measures

Police had strengthened the security at the Mahabodhi Temple and in and around Sri lankan establishments in Chennai.

“We do not know who is responsible for the attack. We are concerned and upset about what happened more than the damage it had caused.” Mahanama thero told the BBC.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner in New Delhi, Mr. Prasad Kariyawasam has left for Chennai.

Assuarences

Kariyawasam has met the Chief Secretary and other officials of Tamil Nadu to express Sri Lankan government's concern over the incident.

Speaking to the media in Chennai, Kariyawasam said that he is seeking assurances from the authorities for the security of visiting Srilankans on business, leisure and pilgrimage.

The High Commissioner said that he is also holding discussions about the killing of Indian fishermen.

Fishermen killed

In the recent weeks, two Indian Fishermen were shot dead while fishing in the Palk Straight.

Indian media reports said the fishermen were killed and two others injured after an apparent confrontation with the Sri Lankan navy.

“Srilankan Navy did not do it.” Assured the High Commissioner. He called for an investigation on the latest incident.
