'Hand over' military court report

Mr Fonseka lost his seat after the military court found him guilty of corruption
A court in Sri Lanka has ordered the army chief to hand over the reports of the entire court proceedings of a military court against former commander Sarath Fonseka.

Colombo High court Judge Sunil Rajapaksha has overruled objections by the Attorney General (AJ) in issuing the order.

The court questioned the state counsel who represented the AJ why a high court has no right to issue orders to military courts.

The judge made the order after the counsel representing Mr Fonseka made a special request when the case on alleged corruption in procuring arms for the military was taken for hearing.

The counsel requested the court to consider whether another trial is needed to investigate the alleged corruption involved Hicorp Company when a military court has already issued its verdict on the same accusations.

The trial has been adjourned until 09 March.

Mr Fonseka, meanwhile, urged three armed forces, police and the public in Sri Lanka to join hands to defeat “insane dictatorship.”

Speaking to journalists while being taken away by the guards after the hearing he said: “They made a lot sacrifices to defeat the terrorism. They will have to make a lot more sacrifices to defeat the insane dictatorship.”

The former four-star general who led the war against the Tamil Tigers, lost his parliamentary seat after the second court martial convicted him of corruption in arms procurement and sentenced to jail for 30 months.

Thousands of opposition supporters took part in a demonstration in the capital Colombo on 08 February to mark a year since his detention.
