Some former Tamil Tigers were released but thousands more are in detention
The former media spokesman for Tamil Tigers has requested a presidential panel that the government should either charge or release detained Tamil Tigers.

Velayutham Thayanidhi, widely known as Daya Master, told the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation (LLRC) in Jaffna that the government should also establish a mechanism to inform the fate of their loved ones to relatives of the "disappeared".

Nearly 10,000 former Tamil Tigers are being detained under emergency regulations for more than a year. Some LTTE suspects have been held for more than 15 years.

Mr Thayanidhi stressed the importance of taking measures to uplift the living standards of the war-affected Tamil people in Vanni.

The LLRC, he said, should intervene to speed up the economic development and help creating new jobs for the younger Tamil generation.

Daya master who surrendered to the military during the last days of the conflict, is currently the news editor of Jaffna based Dan Tamil Oli broadcasting organisation.

Saying they had no evidence to file charges against him, government prosecutors did not object to granting bail to Daya Master.

Nearly 600 written and oral witnesses were submitted to the panel during its four-day hearing in Jaffna.

On Saturday, the government lifted its ban on BBC to cover its proceedings in the northern Sri Lankan town.

Meanwhile, speaking to BBC Sandeshaya from Jaffna JVP parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti said that a group speaking in Sinhala attacked him
while campaigning to get the names of the detainees released.

He accused the government of being responsible of the attack.
