There are constant reports of housemaids being abused by the employers
Doctors in Sri Lanka say that they are treating a housemaid in Saudi Arabia to remove nails and steel pins from her body.

Dr. Kamal Weeratunga of Kamburupitiya hopsital told BBC Sandeshaya that the patient LP Ariyawathie, a mother of three informed them that her employer inserted nails and steel pins to her body daily.

"She still can't properly sit down and walk. When we checked her, we found 24 metal pieces in her legs and hands," the surgeon said.

He said that this was the first time that he has come across such a case.

Ms. Ariyawathie had gone through the abuse for over a month.

Dr. Weeratunga added that the patient is still not in a serious condition and they would attempt to remove as many as metal pieces from her body.

Sri Lankan authorities have told journalists in Colombo that an investigation has been launched.

Tens of thousands of Sri Lankan maids work in the Middle East and there are constant reports of them being abused by the employers.
