Mattakkuliya suspects released on bail
Sri Lanka police
Police have appealed to detain 176 people on suspicion of attacking a police station
A court in Sri Lanka has rejected an application by the police to detain 176 people arrested on suspicion of attacking a police station.

The police have arrested the group accusing them of attacking Mattakkuliya police station on Saturday evening.

Villagers have surrounded the police station after a suspect was reportedly sustained injuries in police custody.

Police who transported the suspects in three buses requested the court to remand them and produce them before an identity parade.

But the lawyers representing the suspects pointed out that the police have failed to produce adequate evidence.

The lawyers have also pointed out that there was no evidence to prove that the suspects have committed an offence under Public Property Act.

"The police report is one of the weakest reports in police history," defence counselor Gunaratne Wanninayake told BBC Sandeshaya.

The police also informed the court that three other suspects are still being questioned in connection with keeping fire arms.

Police spokesman, SSP Prishantha Jayakody on Sunday told BBC Sandeshaya that only twenty five suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

He added that the police chief has transferred the officer in charge of Mattakkuliya police station along with some other officers.

The hearing was postponed until 28 July.
