University student leader released
Sri Lanka Supreme Court
Court found not enough evidence against the student leader
A court in Sri Lanka has ordered the police to acquit and release the leader of the university student union accused of public harassment.

Udul Premaratne, convenor of the Inter University Students Union (IUSF), was accused by the police of harassing the public making derogatory statements against President Rajapaksa and the government on 20 May at the premises of ministry of higher education.

He was ordered to appear before the court by the police to make a statement.

Colombo chief magistrate, Champa Janaki Rajaratne, however, criticised the police for ordering Mr. Premaratne to appear before the court to make a statement.

Former Sirasa journalist

The magistrate warned the police not to get the court involved merely to record a statement from a suspect.

Susil Kindelpitiya
Plaintiff has admitted her earlier statement was wrong

After considering the police report, justice Rajaratne has ordered to release the suspect as the available evidence was not enough to suggest that public was harassed as a result of the said remarks.

The counsel appearing for the accused, Yousuf Nazar, told BBC Sandeshaya that police have failed to find any evidence to charge his client.

Meanwhile, Colombo high court judge has ordered to release Susil Kindelpitiya, the former news director of Sirasa media network, on bail.

Mr. Kindelpitiya, who was accused of abducting a woman using fire arms, has been in remand custody for nearly three months.

He contested the 08 April general election from the main opposition, United National Party.

Mr. Kindelpitiya was released on bail after the Attorney General produced an affidavit by the plaintiff admitting that her earlier statements saying she was abducted and she noted firearms in the vehicle were wrong.
