Mr. Kindelpitiya was arrested with a pisotl and a military deserter, police say

Police spokesman, SP Prishantha Jayakody told BBC Sandeshaya that a complaint was lodged at Mirihana police station on Thursday by a woman who claims to be Susil Kindelpitiya’s mistress.

“She has complained that she was threatened with death, using weapons, asking her not to reveal the affair,” the spokesman said.

The woman had claimed Susil Kindelpitiya has also had affairs with some twenty other women.

'Political vendetta'

Mr. Kindelpitiya, the former news editor of Sirasa media station, is contesting the 08 April elections from the main opposition, United National Party (UNP).

The MTV/Sirasa station has been strongly criticised by the government politicians and its offices and studios came under attack few times in recent times.

SP Jayakody said at the time of the arrest, the politician had a handgun in his car, and was accompanied by a deserter from Sri Lanka navy.

Mr. Kindelpitiya will soon be produced before a court, he added.

The UNP accused the authorities of acting unreasonably with political motives.

Former UNP Colombo district MP Ravi Karunanayake told BBC Sandeshaya: “This is not the kind of case for a candidate to be arrested while in the campaigning process."

He said that the police had lost credibility.
