A group of pro-opposition Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka have launched a "fast unto death" seeking the release of the former military chief. Four Buddhist monks re-launched the fast after the police on Saturday destroyed the shelter in which monks launched a "non-stop" fast for the same purpose. The monks are urging authorities to immediately release Gen Sarath Fonseka, who is facing two court martials on charges of involving in politics while in uniform and corruption in procurement. Lunugamvehere Kalyanansi, Agunochchiye Kumara Kassapa, Donegala Punnasara and Attanayale Vijitha theros launched the new fast on Sunday from a bus stop opposite the Colombo Fort railway station. The fast, organised by the Peoples Collective for the release of Gen Sarath Fonseka, was supported by his wife Anoma Fonseka and Democratic National Alliance (DNA), led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
