Hospital refuses to admit IDP child

Court ordered the authorities to immediately admit the IDP child
The Supreme Court in Sri Lanka has expressed surprise over doctors' refusal to admit an injured displaced child without a court order.

A three-member bench chaired by Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike ordered the Vanni commander to immediately admit the 13-year old girl, injured in a shell attack, to Anuradhapura hospital.

The counsel appeared for the state informed the courts that doctors at Anuradhapura hospital had refused to admit the girl for treatment without a court order.

The girl from the IDP camp was taken to hospital by the military.

Elderly released

The court made the order as a petition by a four-member IDP family seeking their release from the camp was taken for consideration.

The state counsel was ordered to send a copy of the court order to Anuradhapura hospital.

He was also ordered to report the progress to the courts when the petition will be taken for hearing on 06 August.

Meanwhile, the judiciary was informed by the state counsel that nearly 7400 of elderly IDPs were already released from the camp.

Addressing a function in Mahiyangana on Sunday, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that all elderly IDPs have now been released.

"The government has released all persons in IDP camps over 60 years in age while turning 40,000 IDP children as students," a statement in the government information department website said.
