IBAHRI "applauds" the CJ's intention to reform the JSC
The International Bar Association (IBA) has welcomed the commitment expressed by the new Chief Justice (CJ) of Sri Lanka to reform the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) and strengthen the rule of law.

Newly appointed CJ, Asoka de Silva, told BBC Sandeshaya that he is taking steps to reform the JSC as there have been concerns of favouritism within the judicial services during the tenure of his predecessor.

IBA's Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) says Mr. de Silva’s statement is a positive move.

'Positive news'

Justice Richard Goldstone, IBAHRI Co-Chair, stressed the importance of reforming the JSC to secure the independence of the judiciary.

“We applaud Chief Justice de Silva’s intention to improve the functioning of the JSC and hope that the reforms will help strengthen judicial independence and the administration of justice in Sri Lanka,” Justice Goldstone said.

CJ Asoka de Silva told BBC Sinhala service that he will also take measures to strengthen the rule of law.

“Maintaining rule of law is vital for any country. And if they say there are lapses, we need to look into it and take measures to strengthen the rule of law,” he said.

IBAHRI recently issued a detailed report on Sri Lanka’s judicial system after a fact finding mission to Sri Lanka.

The delegation was led by Lord William Goodhart, a member of the House of Lords in Britain and former vice president of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ).

“At the beginning of his term in office, the commitment of the new Chief Justice to strengthening the JSC, and the rule of law in general, is positive news and will help to enhance public confidence in the justice system,” Lord Goodhart said.
