Bar Association of Sri Lanka urged the authorities to investigate the murder and bring the culprits into books

Lawyers in Sri Lanka have protested the killing of Sunday Leader Editor, Lasantha Wickramatunga.

Marching from Supreme Court complex to the headquarters of Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in Colombo, they called for a thorough investigation into the murder.

Mr. Wickrematunga, a lawyer himself, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen on Thursday.

His investigative journalism revealed many incidents of alleged corruption and malpractices by authorities.

Addressing the protesters president of BASL, W Dayaratne, urged the government not to let the assassins to go unpunished.

JVP supporters arrested

Chandana Liyanapatabendi, Attorney at law, told BBC Sandeshaya that the legal professionals are carefully watching the progress of the murder investigation.

I don't why we don't protest when politicians and civilians are killed in similar manner?

He also called on the lawyers to raise their voices on other assassinations as well.

"I don't why we don't protest when politicians and civilians are killed in similar manner?" he questioned.

Meanwhile, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) protested in front of Colombo magistrate court on Monday against the arrest of two JVP supporters.

The suspects, who were posting bills protesting the murder of Mr. Wickrematunga, were accused of putting up anti-government posters.

JVP parliamentarian who led the protest told BBC Sandeshaya that the government has inadvertently admitted the responsibility for media oppression by arresting those protested against it.

The JVP supporters were later released on personal bail.
