Opposition parties in Sri Lanka say every body should unite to protect press freedom and democracy in Sri Lanka. United National Party Leader Ranil Wikcramasinghe invited everyone to attend the funeral of slain journalist Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickremetunge on Monday. “By attending the funeral we can show the government that we will not surrender to its oppression and we will protect the democracy,” he said. UNP Leader made these comments in a joint opposition press conference held at the opposition leader’s official residence in Colombo. Speaking at the press conference SLFP ( M ) leader Mangala Samaraweera pointed out that the editor of Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickramatunga was killed because of his investigative journalism. Lasantha Wickremetunge was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen on Thursday in Colombo. The Sunday Leader editor was a strong critic of Mahinda Rajapaksa government and exposed corruption in the administration and the military. Killer gangs Mangala Samaraweera said “Lasantha Wikramatunga was collecting information about the killers behind political assassinations”. “He was trying to find out more information about the gang which murdered Pararajasingham, Ravi Raj and Janaka Perera”. Hailing Lasantha Wickremetunge as a hero, NSSP Leader Dr. Vikramabahu Karunaratne called every one to unify against the hidden forces that claimed to be pro military nationalistic movements.
