'Majority Tamils' in east census
Sri Lanka Police said that the majority of people who registered with police in Colombo after fleeing the eastern province were Tamil nationals. The government has ordered thousands who fled to Colombo in the past five years from the eastern districts of Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Ampara to register with the police. Police spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ranjith Gunasekara, told BBC Sandesahaya that 4308 people from 1310 families have registered with the police by Sunday evening. Among them are 985 people from 326 families who have recently arrived in Colombo, he added. Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities are almost equally represented in the eastern province. The census indicates that many people have already left back to their homes in the east, SSP Gunasekara added. The government earlier ordered a census of Tamil people who have arrived in Colombo from the north in the last five years. Government's coalition partners and all major opposition parties strongly protested the move. | LOCAL LINKS Registration for visitors from East 01 October, 2008 | Sandeshaya Notice issued to defence secretary22 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya JVP opposes Tamil registration21 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya
