Responding to a question spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara said that the registration is compulsory.

“This is not because of possible infiltration. The Police want to have a mutual understanding with these people” Said Gunasekara.

He added that people coming in from other provinces may have to register in the future.

When BBC Sandeshaya inquired on restrictions placed on those who enter Batticaloa from the north of it, the police spokesman said that several attacks have been launched by those riding motor cycles.

Food Supplies

Meanwhile the police spokesman said that providing food supplies to the displaced will not be disrupted although explosives and batteries have been found from a truck due to join a United Nations convoy.

The UN spokesman, Gordon Weiss, told the BBC that a convoy of sixty trucks, accompanied by their staff, would carry food to the LTTE-controlled Vanni region.

"The convoy is now scheduled to depart in the next days accompanied by UN international staff," the UN said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The UN in Sri Lanka says that it" deplores the placing of explosives by an unknown party " adding that the convoy is "now scheduled to depart in the next days accompanied by UN international staff".

Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara said “ We will take a little more time to check the lorries and this may cause a few hours delay, but the lorries will carry food supplies as usual”
